(BAPTIST)

Savannah, Georgia

First Baptist Church of Savannah is the oldest standing house of worship in historic Savannah, Georgia.

Designed by Elias Carter, First Baptist Church is an outstanding example of Greek Revival architecture. With six columns, a limestone facade, and a clay-tiled roof, this church has graced Savannah’s Chippewa Square since its construction in 1833. The church remained open during the Civil War, welcoming both Confederate and Union soldiers to worship on alternate weeks, and has since demonstrated a commitment to being open and welcoming to all people.

First Baptist Church has served its community throughout its history, beginning with the establishment of Savannah’s first social services, which were coordinated in partnership with several other local congregations, now known as United Ministries of Savannah. The church continues to serve as a gathering space for civic and cultural events, frequently hosting concerts and performances, weekly yoga classes, literary events, and educational opportunities; rents space to mental health professionals; and actively participates in outreach to LGBTQ+ organizations.

A $500,000 National Fund grant with $500,000 in matching funds raised by the congregation will support phase one of a multi-phase capital campaign by repairing the roof and waterproofing the sanctuary.
