North United Methodist Church (North Church) annually serves over 45,000 community members across greater Indianapolis, Indiana.
The founding of North Church’s congregation dates to the mid-1800s, and a merger with a new congregation in the 1920s created North Church as it is known today. The church’s English Gothic building, designed by Charles Hopson and completed in 1931, features a variegated sandstone facade and 12 stained-glass windows representing the 12 apostles.
North Church’s building is a center of activity, hosting an average of 30 events, meetings, classes, and worship sessions each week. It is well-known throughout the community as a place to engage in spiritual and civic learning, as well as access a variety of health, wellness, and social services. North Church partners with schools and youth organizations to provide young people with workplace skills and experience. Advocacy workshops and emergency relief programs help connect vulnerable populations with crucial resources. Three times a week, North Church provides neighbors in need with hot meals utilizing locally grown and donated food, private showers, and bags containing groceries and toiletries, serving 7,400 people annually.
A $500,000 National Fund grant with $500,000 in matching funds raised by the congregation will support phase 2 of North Church’s multi-phase capital project, including masonry repair, water abatement, and window restoration.
