(LUTHERAN)

Lindsborg, Kansas

Bethany Lutheran Church has been a pillar of faith, service, and community in Lindsborg since its construction by Swedish immigrants who settled in Central Kansas through the Railroad Land Grant program in the 1800s.

The town of Lindsborg is a close-knit community with a rich Swedish heritage. Bethany Lutheran Church was constructed in 1874 with a belltower and steeple added in 1880. The building showcases traditional Swedish craftsmanship and features several paintings by notable Swedish impressionists including Birger Sandzen. Bethany Lutheran’s church community also established Bethany College in 1881, which continues to support and celebrate Lindsborg’s Scandinavian heritage.

Bethany Lutheran serves as a central hub for many aspects of community life in Lindsborg, which has a population of 3,500. The congregation provides a host of direct services including clothing, food, counseling, and laundry services. Bethany Lutheran also hosts several nonprofit organizations and social activities for the community, including CPR training, Bethany College events, concerts, historic tours, and Folkdanslag Folk Dancing rehearsals.

A National Fund grant of $500,000 with $500,000 in matching funds raised by the congregation will support the restoration of key structural and architectural elements within their 150-year-old sanctuary.
