Breakers Covenant Church International in Detroit is a community-centric congregation bringing new life to the Albert Kahn-designed Temple Beth El synagogue.

Designed by noted architect Albert Kahn for a Reform Jewish congregation and constructed in 1922, the history of Temple Beth El and Breakers Covenant reflects larger changes to Detroit’s North End neighborhood. Following demographic changes due to white flight, the synagogue was purchased by an African American congregation in 1974. Breakers Covenant is the third Black congregation to steward the building, which is listed in the National Register and is considered a significant example of early twentieth-century Classical Revival style architecture. The domed sanctuary boasts frescoes depicting major figures and events in Jewish history. Original Jewish iconography and verses remain throughout the building and are diligently stewarded by members of Breakers Covenant.

Since purchasing the building in 2014, Breakers Covenant has renamed it the Bethel Community Transformation Center, serving the surrounding North End neighborhood through programs like emergency financial assistance, social activities for older adults, youth enrichment, and counseling services. Breakers Covenant has also formed a faith partnership with Downtown Synagogue, bringing interfaith programming and joint holiday celebrations to the historic building.

A National Fund grant of $250,000 with matching funds of at least $500,000 to be raised by Breakers Covenant will assist the congregation in addressing its highest priority life safety needs, as indicated by a recent building conditions assessment and guidance from leaders in Detroit’s historic preservation community. Urgent priorities include repairs to exterior masonry, windows, exterior stairs, and the interior sub-basement.

Spotlighting Women’s History at Historic Houses of Worship

Religious institutions have served both as a platform for the advancement of women’s rights and opportunities, and women have played critical roles in advancing religious traditions. The leadership and community building opportunities within these sacred sites have been critical to increasing female independence outside of the home and allowing women to develop institutions that strengthen their congregations and broader communities. The four historic houses of worship highlighted embody positive examples of how the histories of women and religion are inherently linked.
